Dr. James Duane Bolin
PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF HISTORY
Murray State University, Murray, KY
Dec.12th 1955 – Aug.27th 2022
Last Sunday afternoon I received a text message
From my brother Tim that my child-hood friend
Duane Bolin had passed from this earth life.
I was shocked and saddened to hear this news.
Although Duane was 6 years older we shared
much in common. Our love for the Lord, the
Game of basketball and history, His father and
Mine were both ministers in Dixon, KY.
I corresponded with him while he was writing
His book on Coach Rupp and the history of
Kentucky basketball.
I want to share this story…
One afternoon Duane came and played basketball with us
On Childs court outside of Dixon near our
Beloved W.C.H.S. I admired Duane and looked
Up to him. He was a great basketball player for
The Trojans and I loved watching him play the
Game. He gave me some pointers on my shot
That day. I have never forgotten it is fresh in
My memory as if we played together only
Yesterday.
I will be unable to attend the visitation and
Funeral but believe me I will be there “in spirit.”
Evelyn, Wesley and Cammie Jo you are in my
Prayers as you face life without Duane.
I encourage you to cast your burden on the Lord.
“Cast your burden on the
Lord,
And He shall sustain you;
He shall never permit the
Righteous to be moved.”
Psalm 55:22
The reality is that you
Will grieve forever.
You will not “get over”
The loss of a loved one;
You will learn to live with it.
You will heal and you will
Rebuild yourself around
The loss you have suffered.
You will be whole again but
You will never be the same.
Nor should you be the same
Nor would you want to.

WHAT WILL MATTER…
So what will matter?
How will the value of your days be measured?
What will matter is not what you bought but what you built,
Not what you got but what you gave.
What will matter is not your success but your significance.
What will matter is not what you learned but what you taught.
What will matter is every act of integrity, compassion,
courage or sacrifice that enriched, empowered or encouraged
others to emulate your example.
What will matter is not your competence but your character.
What will matter is not how many people you knew,
But how many will feel a lasting loss when you’re gone.
What will matter is not your memories but the memories
of those who loved you.
What will matter is how long you will be remembered,
by whom and for what.
Living a life that matters doesn’t happen by accident.
It’s not a matter of circumstance but of choice.
Choose to live a life that matters.
